When is Greek road tax (τέλη κυκλοφορίας) due, and what's the penalty for paying late?

Last verified: 2026-09-16

When ΑΑΔΕ's annual road-tax window opens and closes, how the automatic late-payment penalties work since Law 5113/2024, and where to check the current fee for your vehicle.

The short answer

Greek road tax (τέλη κυκλοφορίας) for a given year is collected in advance, between 1 November and 31 December of the previous year, so the fee for 2027 falls due between 1 November and 31 December 2026. Miss that window and the fine is automatic and escalating: +25% if you pay in January, +50% if you pay in February, and a separate fine equal to 100% of the amount you owe (effectively doubling it) from March onward, never less than €30. There's no informal grace period anymore — Law 5113/2024 removed the extensions that used to follow the deadline.

Who owes it, and when

Everyone who owns a registered vehicle owes the fee for it, whether or not ΑΑΔΕ sends a reminder first — the law doesn't require prior notice. A vehicle registered for the first time is a special case: its road tax is due before the registration certificate (άδεια κυκλοφορίας) is even issued, not within the usual November–December window. If a vehicle's technical details change in a way that alters the fee, the new amount only takes effect from the following calendar year.

The late-payment penalties, in full

  • Pay within January of the year the fee is for: +25%
  • Pay within February: +50%
  • Pay after that — more than two months late, not at all, or only partially, through the taxpayer's own fault: a separate fine equal to 100% of the fee, on top of the fee itself
  • The fine is never less than €30, whatever the underlying fee would otherwise be
  • A halved version of these fines applies to a specific set of vehicle categories defined elsewhere in tax law (Article 20(1)(A.γ, A.δ, B.α, B.β) of Law 2948/2001) — if you think this applies to your vehicle, confirm with a λογιστής rather than assume

These figures come from Article 27 of Law 5113/2024 (ΦΕΚ Α' 96/21.06.2024), which rewrote paragraph 1 of subparagraph Ε.7 of Law 4093/2012, the provision governing road tax collection. The finance ministry can still extend the payment deadline by its own decision, and separately the deadline for declaring a vehicle off the road (see below), so treat the November–December window as the rule rather than an absolute.

Paying it

Road tax is managed through ΑΑΔΕ's myAADE portal, via the myCAR service, normally with your TAXISnet credentials. ΑΑΔΕ also offers a route for owners without TAXISnet access, using their ΑΦΜ and the vehicle's plate number instead. There's no paper fallback — check myAADE for the amount due on your own vehicle before the window closes, since that's the only place that shows your actual, current-year fee.

If a vehicle isn't going to be driven

If a vehicle genuinely won't be on the road, its owner can declare it off-circulation (θέση σε ακινησία) instead of paying the fee for the period it's declared. The deadline for filing that declaration is set separately, by the same kind of ministerial decision that can move the general payment deadline — check myAADE directly rather than assume it lines up with the regular November–December window.

Track it in Epimeleia

The fee itself doesn't change much year to year, but the window is short and easy to lose track of if you own more than one vehicle or don't live in Greece year-round. Add each vehicle in Epimeleia and set a reminder ahead of 1 November — you'll have enough runway to pay before the automatic 25% penalty kicks in on 1 January, and the payment confirmation has somewhere to live once you've made it.

Before you rely on this

This guide describes the payment window and late-payment penalty structure set out in Article 27 of Law 5113/2024 (ΦΕΚ Α' 96/21.06.2024), current as of the date at the top of this page. It doesn't state this year's exact fee for any specific vehicle — that depends on engine size, emissions class and registration date, and only myAADE has the current figure for your vehicle. Confirm any date or amount in your own myAADE account, or with a licensed Greek accountant, before relying on it.
