What does it cost to transfer a car in Greece, and what do you need?
Last verified: 2026-10-17
The official fees, the documents and the eligibility conditions for transferring a private passenger car or motorcycle in Greece, as listed in the national register of administrative procedures.
The short answer
Transferring a private passenger car or motorcycle in Greece costs two official fees, both paid into a regional bank account before the transfer is issued. The register of administrative procedures (mitos.gov.gr) lists a registration-licence fee of €75 for a passenger car or €9 for a motorcycle, plus a transfer fee that depends on engine size, from €30 up to €205. The register estimates the whole procedure at 15 days. It does not state a deadline by which a seller must file after a sale, so this guide does not give one.
The transfer fee, by engine size
The transfer fee for passenger cars and motorcycles of every category and use is set by engine capacity:
- Up to 400 cc: €30
- 401–800 cc: €45
- 801–1300 cc: €60
- 1301–1600 cc: €90
- 1601–1900 cc: €120
- 1901–2500 cc: €145
- 2501 cc and above: €205
Cases covered by the VAT rules can be exempt from this fee; the register says to attach the relevant invoice or sales receipt in that case. On the Cyclades islands (Andros, Thira, Kea-Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Syros and Tinos) an additional local fee applies, listed on the same page.
Who can use the gov.gr online route
The register says the online route through gov.gr is available only if all of these hold:
- The seller and the buyer are both natural persons.
- 100% of the ownership is transferred, the vehicle is in circulation, and there are no unpaid road-tax (τέλη κυκλοφορίας) debts.
- There is a valid KTEO inspection certificate, or the vehicle is not yet due for one (vehicles under four years old).
- There is no retention of ownership on the vehicle, or, if there is one, it is more than seven years since the licence was issued to the current holder.
- The registration licence carries none of the listed remark codes.
- No other application is in progress for the vehicle.
If your case does not meet these, the procedure goes through the regional transport department (Διεύθυνση Μεταφορών και Επικοινωνιών) or a KEP office instead.
What the paper route asks for
- The original registration licence, signed by both seller and buyer
- A copy of ID for each party
- A valid KTEO certificate (original)
- A certificate of no road-tax debt, issued through gov.gr or, as a fallback, by the tax office
- The bank receipts for the fees above, showing the buyer's name and the vehicle's registration number
- A notarial power of attorney or authorisation if either party cannot attend
Track it in Epimeleia
A transfer touches several things that expire or fall due: the KTEO certificate must be valid, the road tax must be paid up, and the new owner starts with a fresh set of dates. Add the vehicle in Epimeleia and set reminders for its KTEO and road-tax dates, so neither blocks a sale later.
Before you rely on this
This guide summarises one page of the national register of administrative procedures, last updated on 14 October 2026 according to the page itself, and reflects it as of the date at the top of this page. Fees and conditions change; confirm them with the regional transport department or on gov.gr before paying anything.
