How often does a water softener need servicing?

Last verified: 2026-10-03

What BWT, Grünbeck, Judo, SYR and Culligan say in their manuals about topping up salt versus the professional service, and how Watts OneFlow differs.

The short answer

A salt-based water softener has two separate maintenance jobs, and they run on different clocks. You check the salt and the unit's condition often: every two months in the Grünbeck and Judo manuals, and weekly in the BWT WS-series manual. A professional service is needed once a year in the BWT, Grünbeck, Judo, SYR and Culligan manuals we checked. Topping up salt is not the service, and the yearly service does not replace your own checks.

What you do yourself: salt and a visual check

Manufacturers put the owner's routine in different places, so follow your own manual. What the ones we checked say:

  • BWT WS series: "check the salt and water level in the brine cabinet weekly."
  • Grünbeck softliQ:SD: an inspection by the owner at least every 2 months. Check the

soft-water hardness, check there are enough salt tablets (the salt level must always sit above the water level), and check the hoses and control valve for leaks. Every six months, also check the salt is not clumped or crusted.

  • Judo i-soft TGA: an inspection every 2 months. Check the salt supply, leaks, damage

and display messages. Judo says this inspection is needed to keep your statutory warranty claim. Every six months, add a check for salt deposits in the drain siphon and the soft-water hardness.

  • SYR LEX Plus 10 Connect: a check of hardness, salt consumption and a visual leak

check every six months.

  • BWT Bewasoft and Perla Silk: check and refill the regeneration salt after use,

check hardness twice a year, and inspect the salt storage area every two months.

Use the salt grade your manual names. Grünbeck specifies tablet salt to DIN EN 973 type A, and Culligan tells owners to use only Culligan-quality salt and not table salt.

What a professional does: the yearly service

  • BWT (Bewasoft and Perla Silk manuals): "The water softener should be serviced once

a year," by a BWT certified technician, and wearing parts are replaced within the prescribed intervals "to guarantee functionality and fulfil the warranty conditions."

  • Grünbeck: the yearly service may only be done by the manufacturer's customer

service. It adds measuring raw and soft-water hardness, reading the water meter and error memory, checking hoses, cables and the injector, and more.

  • Judo: once a year by Judo's factory service or licensed trade. The unit shows a

"Wartung / Service" message after one year of operation.

  • SYR: at least once a year by factory service or a trained technician. It includes

cleaning the salt tank and a function test. SYR also lists replacing the seal set and chlorine cell (part 1500.01.900) every two years.

  • Culligan (Modernity manual): inspection "in general once a year," more often with

sediment, chlorine, turbidity or very hard water. It also says to call Culligan before restarting a unit after a long period unused.

A SYR-specific figure like the two-year part swap is for that model. Don't carry it over to another brand.

A different kind of unit: Watts OneFlow

Watts OneFlow is not a salt-regenerated softener. Its documentation says it needs no salt or chemicals and no service contract, only a cartridge or media replacement after one to three years depending on the model. Check your model's part list for its interval.

Is it a legal requirement?

Not that we've found in Greek law, and we did not look for one. SYR's manual says the inspection and servicing of water softeners is prescribed by the standard DIN EN 806-5, and Judo's manual says the same about inspection of domestic installations. Both are manufacturer statements about a German-published standard. Treat the yearly service as a manufacturer requirement tied to your warranty, not as a Greek legal deadline.

Before you rely on this

These are the manuals of the models in the sources above, and other models from the same brands may differ. Your own manual and installer have the final say.

Track it in Epimeleia

Add the softener as an item, set a 12-month service reminder, and add a recurring two-month reminder to check the salt. Attach each service report, so you can show your service history if a warranty claim depends on it.
