How often does a fire extinguisher need servicing in Greece?

Last verified: 2026-09-24

What Greek law (ΚΥΑ 618/43/2005 and the vehicle equipment decision) actually requires for inspecting, maintaining and replacing a fire extinguisher — at home, in a car, or anywhere else — and what's only required for specific building spaces, not every home.

The short answer

Greek law treats fire extinguisher maintenance the same way wherever the extinguisher is installed — home, car, office, boat. Under Κ.Υ.Α. 618/43/2005 (ΦΕΚ 52/Β/20.1.2005), every installed portable fire extinguisher must be inspected by a recognised maintenance company once a year, on top of intervals for deeper servicing and a maximum working life. Owners also have a duty to check their own extinguisher periodically — at least once a quarter, ideally every month. There's no separate, looser rule for an extinguisher kept in a car versus one kept at home: the same maintenance schedule applies to both, because the decision regulates the extinguisher itself, not the building or vehicle it sits in.

The maintenance schedule, by extinguisher type

The official schedule (Annex III of the decision) counts from the installation date, or from no later than one year after the manufacture date stamped on the body. It sets four checkpoints, and how often each applies depends on what's inside the extinguisher:

  • Foam, water and water-based extinguishers: annual maintenance every year; a deeper "further maintenance" (including a refill) at 4 and 12 years; a laboratory test (including a hydraulic pressure test) at 8 and 16 years; maximum working life 20 years.
  • Powder extinguishers (the type fitted to almost every car, and most home units): the same pattern as foam and water — annual maintenance, further maintenance at 4 and 12 years, lab test at 8 and 16 years, 20-year maximum life.
  • Powder extinguishers with sealed pressure (the type that lets the head be removed without losing pressure): annual maintenance every year, one further maintenance at 15 years, one lab test at 10 years, 20-year maximum life.
  • Halon and CO₂ extinguishers: annual maintenance every year and one lab test at 10 years, with no separate "further maintenance" step. Halon has a 20-year maximum life; for CO₂ the decision defers to whichever national or EU directive applies.

So for the powder extinguisher that's almost certainly in your car or under your kitchen sink: expect an annual check every year, a more thorough service (with a refill) after 4 years and again after 12, a lab-tested pressure check after 8 years and again after 16, and retirement at 20 years regardless of condition.

What the owner is responsible for, between visits

Separately from the professional schedule, the decision puts a duty on the owner (or their representative) to run their own checks "not less than quarterly, and preferably monthly" — more often if conditions call for it. These checks simply confirm the extinguisher is in its assigned spot, visible, unobstructed, has legible operating instructions, and shows no signs of damage. This owner check doesn't replace the annual professional maintenance — it's what catches a missing pin or a punctured hose between paid visits.

Vehicles: a specific extinguisher is also legally required

For cars and other motor vehicles, a portable fire extinguisher isn't just advisable — it's required equipment under Υ.Α. 50292/3549/2008 (ΦΕΚ 272/Β/16.2.2009), which sets out exactly which type each vehicle category must carry. A standard passenger car (category M1, up to 8 seats besides the driver) needs one Type 1 extinguisher: dry powder, rated for at least fire classes 8A, 34B, C. Larger vehicles need higher-rated or additional extinguishers.

That same decision explicitly ties the vehicle extinguisher back to the general maintenance rule: it must be re-inspected on the Κ.Υ.Α. 618/43/2005 schedule above, and it must carry both the maintenance company's control label and a ring stamped into the neck of the cylinder showing the year of the last annual service. A ΚΤΕΟ inspection checks exactly this — the labels and ring, that the pressure gauge needle sits in the green zone, that the body shows no corrosion or damage, and that the next annual check isn't already overdue. An extinguisher that's expired, unpressurised or missing its ring is treated as if it weren't there at all, which is a ΚΟΚ equipment violation.

Homes: no blanket legal requirement to own one

Unlike vehicles, Greek building law does not require every home to have a fire extinguisher. The building fire-safety regulation (Π.Δ. 71/1988, Article 5) only mandates portable extinguishers in specific spaces within residential buildings: boiler rooms, fuel stores and plant rooms, in any residential building with 5 or more floors, or in a building of up to 4 floors where a single floor exceeds 500 m²; and at least two extinguishers in any electromechanical installation space with a fire risk, in a residential building of any size. An ordinary single-family house or apartment carries no such obligation under this regulation.

If you keep an extinguisher at home anyway — a sensible precaution most fire services recommend even where it isn't mandatory — it falls under the same Κ.Υ.Α. 618/43/2005 schedule as any other installed extinguisher: annual professional maintenance, the 4/12-year and 8/16-year checkpoints for its type, and a 20-year retirement date.

Before you rely on this

This reflects the current text of Κ.Υ.Α. 618/43/2005 and Υ.Α. 50292/3549/2008, read directly from the official ΦΕΚ text, and the residential-buildings chapter of Π.Δ. 71/1988. It doesn't cover the fine for a missing or expired vehicle extinguisher, which is set elsewhere in the traffic code and wasn't confirmed against an official source for this guide — ask your ΚΤΕΟ centre or insurer for the current figure. Maintenance and re-inspection must be carried out by a company recognised for that work — ask to see its authorisation before handing over your extinguisher.

Track it in Epimeleia

Add each fire extinguisher as an item — one for the car, one for the kitchen, one for the boiler room — and set its maintenance interval to 12 months. Epimeleia will also flag the 4-, 8-, 12-, 16- and 20-year milestones for a powder extinguisher, so the deeper service and the retirement date don't catch you out. Attach the maintenance company's certificate each time, so the paperwork a ΚΤΕΟ inspector or an insurer asks for is already on hand.
